Abducted in Plain Sight
In this powerful talk, Jan Broberg tells the true story of how she was kidnapped multiple times in the 1970s by a charismatic friend of the family. Devoted to their faith, family and community, her parents were unprepared for the sophisticated tactics their neighbor used to exploit their vulnerabilities, drive them apart and turn Jan against them, permanently altering their lives. But ultimately Jan’s story is one of hope. She explores how she moved from deep sadness, shame, grief and trauma to great love, happiness, forgiveness and advocacy.
While many have attempted to place blame on her parents, Jan sees it differently.
“My parents saved my life. They’re the bravest people I know, willing to try to help the rest of you see what they didn’t. That is the only reason we told our story.”
Jan Broberg talks about all the corresponding decisions that reshaped the trajectory of her life; something she hopes will shine a light for the audience to do the same. As Jan puts it, “A happy childhood, at any age, is possible.”
