I’m Black & I’m Trans
Intersectionality. Identities intersecting? Sure. But when we talk about intersectionality from a social justice standpoint, we are referring to the ways that marginalized and oppressed identities intersect. As a black, gay, disabled, transgender man and seahorse dad, Kayden Coleman’s intersections are a smorgasbord of marginalization and oppression which, luckily for you, means great content for lived experienced education. Join Kayden as he navigates all of his identities and talks about anti-blackness, anti-racism, transphobia, homophobia and ableism. Are you ready to unpack and unlearn your implicit biases?
Seahorse Dad, Influencer, and Creator of #TRANSgendaTime
Kayden Coleman is a groundbreaking Black transgender advocate, educator, and “seahorse dad” whose personal journey has transformed into a powerful platform for change. Known affectionately as “Papa Seahorse” (referencing how male seahorses carry fertilized eggs), Kayden has dedicated his life to advocating for transgender, Black, and queer communities through visibility, education, and authentic storytelling.
Kayden’s journey into the public eye began unexpectedly in 2013 when, four years into his gender transition, he discovered he was pregnant with his first child. This rare experience—as one of very few Black transgender men to publicly carry and give birth to children—catapulted him into prominence after his story went viral in 2015. Far from shying away from the spotlight, Kayden embraced his unique position to educate and advocate.
His motto, “I didn’t step out of the box just to step into another one,” perfectly captures his approach to life and advocacy. Kayden has used his platform to speak candidly about his experiences navigating the healthcare system as a Black, gay transgender man, highlighting the discrimination and barriers many transgender individuals face when seeking medical care.
Kayden is a proud parent to two daughters: Azaelia Skye (born January 2014) and Jurnee Solé (born in 2020). He was featured in a Lexus commercial titled “The Evolution of Family,” bringing transgender parenting visibility to mainstream media.
When his second pregnancy story went viral during the height of COVID-19 in 2020, Kayden faced both support and backlash—including having his images used by a political figure to fuel anti-transgender rhetoric. Rather than retreating, this experience only strengthened his resolve to continue advocacy work and bring awareness to transgender individuals who carry their own children.
As a keynote speaker, educator, and social media influencer, Kayden has built an impressive career addressing the gaps in understanding and support for transgender individuals, particularly in reproductive and medical spaces. He has spoken at prestigious institutions including Harvard, Duke, Yale, the University of North Carolina, and Old Dominion University, and provided diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings for major organizations such as IKEA, AWHONN (Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses), and Acura.
His speaking engagements often focus on sharing his birth stories and debunking myths about transgender pregnancy, creating what audiences describe as engaging, personal, and transformative experiences. Kayden’s intersectional approach—addressing how his identities as a Black, gay, disabled, transgender man interact with systems of oppression—provides rich educational content grounded in lived experience.
Kayden’s advocacy spans several initiatives:
– He offers workshops and consultation services through his brand Kayden Speaks
– He is the author of a self-published poetry e-book titled “In The Mind & Heart of An Anxious Lover”
– He is an influential social media presence, using platforms to educate and advocate
Through these projects, Kayden is working to bridge the disparities that exist in healthcare and birthing spaces for transgender individuals, who often face discrimination, misgendering, and exclusion from resources labeled as “women’s spaces.”
In 2021, Kayden was named to the OUT 100, a recognition of influential LGBTQ+ individuals, honoring his contributions as a reproductive justice advocate for the transgender masculine community. He has been profiled in numerous high-profile publications including Today, ABC News, and Good Morning America.
Kayden’s influence extends beyond his speaking and media presence. What began as a simple workshop about transgender masculine fertility and birth unexpectedly gained significant attention, revealing to him the substantial need for education on this topic and launching his career as an advocate.
Today, Kayden continues his mission to make the world safer and more equitable by amplifying the voices of the often invisible transgender masculine community. His approach combines personal vulnerability, educational expertise, and a commitment to intersectional justice that addresses racism, transphobia, homophobia, and ableism.
In a world where transgender individuals—particularly Black transgender people—face disproportionate violence, discrimination, and erasure, Kayden Coleman stands as a beacon of resilience, authenticity, and transformative education. Through his continued advocacy, he is creating pathways for greater understanding and inclusion, one story, one workshop, and one changed mind at a time.
