Latin Misconceptions & Disability
Paula was born and acquired her disability in Venezuela. She acquired brain damage from a surgery at the age of five, which caused a non-traumatic brain injury in the motor cortex region of her brain. For a couple of weeks, Carozzo’s parents shuttled her from specialist to specialist in the search of answers and a proper diagnosis, but failed to find answers due to the country’s lack of resources. This led the family to move to the U.S. in search of answers. Carozzo’s immigration story stems from arriving in a new country to eradicating the mindset of having to “cure” disabilities in a latin culture stigma.
