In recent years, some of the most inspiring public speakers on non-binary identity include Jeffrey Marsh, Asia Kate Dillon, Jonathan Van Ness, Ruby Rose, Amandla Stenberg, and Jacob Tobia.
Many people do not identify as a man or a woman. The concept of two genders (male or female) is known as the gender binary. People whose gender is not exclusively male or exclusively female use many different terms to describe themselves, with non-binary being the most common. Some possess two or more genders, some have no gender, and others fluctuate along the gender spectrum. While these concepts are not new, our collective understanding is still evolving.
While they are often used interchangeably, there are some distinct differences. Genderqueer is a gender identity that's built around the term “queer.” Queer is a term that encompasses all sexual orientations that vary from the heterosexual "norm”. Although it's typically used to describe a person's sexual orientation, it can also be used to express a non-binary gender identity. Individuals who identify as genderqueer do not necessarily identify as non-binary.
Most transgender people are not non-binary. Transgender people typically have a gender identity that is either male or female, and they should be treated like any other woman or man.
In addition to the aforementioned “genderqueer”, other terms include agender, bigender, androgynous, and two-spirit.
Millions of people across the globe are alienated when gender is expressed as a binary. Policies ranging from dress codes to bathrooms can create unnecessary obstacles when non-binary identities are ignored. In working towards more inclusive workplaces and campuses, it is useful to understand basic concepts such as correct pronouns.
